Mathematics staff at the University of Worcester have collaborated with Loughborough University to develop a free online course to prepare students for employers’ numeracy testing and numeracy in the workplace. This short course called Numeracy Skills for Employability and the Workplace is offered on the FutureLearn platform and aims to improve both numeracy skills and mathematical confidence. For many students, especially those who have had little or no mathematics as part of their higher education studies, employers’ numeracy testing is often a barrier to employment.
This three-week opens on 15 June and will run again later in the year. The course uses a combination of video and onscreen tutorials, course discussions and quizzes with detailed feedback. There will also be some short cameo videos with academics and professionals speaking about the importance of numeracy in everyday life and the workplace. There is the opportunity for learners to purchase a certificate of completion from FutureLearn to demonstrate they have followed the course.
