Homophobia in women’s sport
Rachael Bullingham
Course Leader for Physical Education and Outdoor Education
Homophobia in sport has recently been in the press due to the current Commons select committee inquiry. This inquiry has allowed the topic of homophobia to be discussed in the national press and debate has occurred around sport, with a particular focus on football. However, there are different challenges for men and women when they come out in sport which is a point often missed by the media. This presentation will highlight the results from a recent study conducted on women competing in team sports. The results were predominately positive with some extension and refinement of the concept of homohysteria.
