Supporting Health and Promoting Exercise (SHAPE) in Young People with Psychosis

Dr Lisa Griffiths
Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Science

Physical health problems are common in young people with psychosis who experience poor health and a significant reduction in life expectancy. Moreover, the mortality gap compared to non-psychotic peers is widening. NICE (2014) developed eight quality standards for the care of adults with psychosis and schizophrenia which included two physical health standards requiring services to complete a comprehensive physical health assessment and offer lifestyle interventions. This presentation will highlight the physical health challenges associated with first episode psychosis, discuss the prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors, and the potential for lifestyle and exercise interventions as part of the health care pathway to address physical health needs.
