University Teaching Award Scheme 2017

The University Teaching Award Scheme is now launched for its second round, having been developed as part of the initiatives to celebrate excellence at UW.

This Scheme is designed to recognise and reward excellent and outstanding practice in teaching, and in supporting and leading learning. The Scheme explicitly promotes innovative, inspiring and excellent practice which is outstanding in its impact to enhance and inspire student learning.

There are three categories of Award:

A             University of Worcester Teaching Award

B             University of Worcester Teaching Team Award

C             University of Worcester Leading Teaching Award.

Applications are welcomed from staff with a range of experience including academic staff, professional services and staff working in learning support. Full details are attached, and also available via O:\All Staff Documents\QED\UW Teaching Award Scheme.

Enter The Great Hive Cake-Off

Budding bakers of all ages are invited to create a show-stopping cake as part of The Hive’s 5th anniversary community day on Saturday 8 July. The Great Hive Cake-off is a fun competition for anyone who enjoys baking. The cakes can be anything, as long as they take inspiration from The Hive.

There are two categories for ages 16 and under and 16 and over. The baking battle winners will be crowned The Hive at Five Star Bakers and each receive a £25 voucher and golden wooden spoon.

Competitors are asked to bring in their cake between 12 to 2pm to be displayed on the table and judging will begin at 3pm. Entry forms can be downloaded from The Hive events webpage.

The community event is 10.00am to 4.00pm and will include local food and drink stalls, entertainment, craft activities, story time for kids as well as the Hive at Five exhibition.


Enjoy The Hive at Five Community Party

A big family event for all the community is taking place on Saturday 8 July to celebrate The Hive’s fifth anniversary.

Music, children’s entertainment, food and drinks stalls, an exhibition and a Great Hive Cake-Off competition have been organised to provide something for people of all ages and bring the community together.

Activities for children under five will begin at 10am with children’s entertainers Jungle Jiggle and staff from The Hive will present a birthday themed imagination station. Children can join in with storytelling, treasure hunts and crafts throughout the day.

The Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service will be hosting a behind the scenes tour of The Hive archives and collections, plus there will be an exhibition in taking visitors on a journey of The Hive’s achievements, successes and events since the opening in 2012.

Live music will take place throughout the day with performances from Vocal High choir, performance choir of St Clements Primary, St John’s will begin at 10am, and the Worcester Ukulele Club are playing from 1pm to 1.45pm.

Charity of the Year 2017

Thank you to all colleagues who have nominated a charity to be considered for the University’s Charity of the Year for 2017. We have received a significant number of nominations.

Colleagues are now invited to vote for their favoured cause from the full list of those nominated. Please only vote for one charity.

To vote, please log in to the staff homepage, and click on ‘Charity of the Year 2017’ under Your Online Services. Votes can be cast from today (Thursday 15 June) until 10am on Friday 23 June. The Charity with the largest number of votes will be announced as the University’s Charity of the Year.

Once decided, the Charity of the Year will benefit from a number of fundraising initiatives here at the University.

First Worcester Pitchcroft parkrun a Fantastic Success

Thanks to Sport Development & Coaching Student, Sam Payne

The first Worcester Pitchcroft Parkrun took place on Saturday 10 June 2017 around Worcester racecourse, and was fantastically successful involving 335 runners and 30 volunteers. The new weekly 5k event has been initiated and developed by one of our current 3rd year Sport Development and Coaching students, Sam Payne, who did a brilliant job in the organisation and delivery both before and on the day itself. His pre-run briefing was considered highly professional, thanking all the partner organisations (Worcester City Council, Sport Partnership Herefordshire & Worcestershire, University of Worcester, Black Pear Joggers, Worcester parkrun etc.), and encouraging everyone to continue to support this ongoing family friendly opportunity. In fact his first message out to partners headlining the initial statistics identified the need to “start encouraging specific demographic groups, who may be in need, to join the service we provide each week”.

The event was well supported by University staff both as runners, spectators and volunteer marshals, so please consider getting involved in some way. Sam would like to encourage as many people to attend so please do promote this to all and come along on any Saturday – 8.45am meet at the pavilion to the East of the racecourse (see location on map):

This is the second parkrun to be established in Worcester. The existing parkrun at the Countryside Centre achieved 489 runners on Saturday so combining the two events, ensured 824 Saturday morning runners within the city. The average finishing time was 27 mins and the course record (not that it’s about that) stands at 16:58 for males, and 20:08 for females.

Sam first developed the idea through his second year Sponsorship & Fundraising module, and has since focused on the initiative for his Sport Development Project (IS equivalent), raising the required funding, linking local partner organisations and undertaking the time consuming and gruelling processes of application, planning and risk management procedures. Well done Sam on a brilliant project, well delivered and for being “a real credit to the University” (anonymous runner!).

Cake sale Thursday 22 June

Finance are holding a cake sale in order to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice on Thursday 22 June.

Clive, Charlie, Dave, Mark and Steve are doing the Worcestershire Way walk on Friday 23 June,, covering 31 miles in a day.

We would be grateful for baked or bought contributions, as well as your financial contribution in terms of buying cakes so that we can raise money for this worthwhile cause!

The cake sale will be held in Finance, WB057, on the 22nd from 9am. So come and grab a cake or three.

Invitation to an information evening for the Diploma in Education and Training at UW

Wednesday 21 June 2017 5:30pm to 6:30pm at St John’s Campus

Come and study part-time for your Diploma in Education and Training (DET) at the University of Worcester.

The DET is:

  • nationally recognised teaching qualification for those working in the post 16 Education and Skills sector
  • part-time over 2 years
  • a progression route to gain QLTS (qualified teacher status, learning and skills) or higher education qualifications

You will need to have access to some teaching practice to complete this course. This can be paid, voluntary, work based or College/ community based. Advice on this will be available at this event.

Undertaking the Role of the External Examiner

Two colleagues from the Institute of Education Secondary Centre participated in a recent pilot course for External Examiners being organised through the Higher Education Academy.

The pilot course was aimed at aspiring as well as those with experience as an external examiner and provided an opportunity for all those engaged in the pilot to offer a perspective and input to the course.

The course involved a series of activities supported by a wealth of reading and research materials accessed via the HE Academy web site prior to a full day of activities.

Participants were from a wide number of Institutions throughout the UK. The on- line activities provided stimulating and thought provoking exemplars and tasks relating to the work of External Examining and the nature of Academic Standards.

The final day in Cardiff was facilitated by Professor Margaret Price from Oxford Brookes University and focused on the Key B7 indicators. Having outlined the national picture, participants had the opportunity to share practice, debate and review elements that influence and impact on Academic Standards through a series of workshops.

With over ten years’ experience as an External Examiner, this was a wonderfully invigorating course offering the chance not only to consider current practices but to hold in depth discussions with those involved in external examiner work and to solve case study dilemmas and scenarios.

Last few places : Skills Gym – ‘Working with Others’

Dear Colleague

We would like to invite you to participate in our latest Skills Gym called ‘Working with Others’. This is the first of two half day Skills Gyms that have been developed to look at understanding those we work with, both customers and colleagues, to enable us to understand the issues and effectively resolve difficult situations. This Skills Gym will involve a half day training session which will look to develop key life skills that you will be able to put into practice in your work environment.

This first session will look at how our perceptions become our reality, how we react to the needs of others, using questioning and listening skills to understand rather than judge. You will look at how to establish the best approaches, verbally and non-verbally and stay professional under pressure.

Sally Booth (from Juno Learning & Development) runs this ‘Working with Others’ Skills Gym. Sally is passionate about building confidence and skills in others that help enhance their performance at work. Her enthusiastic approach looks at the drivers of behaviours and finding an approach that works for individuals, moving you from understanding to actual practice.

The half-day sessions will take place on Tuesday June 27 and Wednesday 28 June with exact details around the time and location available on Workshop Bookings.

Financial Awareness Day for PGCE Secondary trainees

Economics and Business and Maths trainees enjoyed a joint subject session at university earlier this year where they learnt about teaching financial awareness and used their knowledge to develop a range of activities they could use with their own pupils whilst on placement. Building on this experience the PGCE Secondary trainees were challenged to create new resources aimed specifically for pupils with special needs and to plan and deliver a Financial Awareness Day at Cambian New Elizabethan School. The trainees worked with 21 pupils, each with different needs, to develop their skills in handling money. Activities included buying and selling role plays, coin bingo, designing a budget for visiting a safari park and creating a storyboard demonstrating shopping in context. Trainees demonstrated much enthusiasm and motivation for leading the event and teaching in this setting and enjoyed a very warm welcome from the staff and pupils at the school.

Trainee Ellen Jauncey commented “the school had a very different atmosphere compared to a mainstream school as it felt much more relaxed. It was interesting to talk to the pupils and we all felt that the experience was extremely rewarding. It gave us a better insight into different SEN strategies that can be used to support individual pupils and their needs.”
