Launch of 2019 undergraduate student surveys

Dear colleagues,

On Monday 4 February 2019, we will be launching the National Student Survey (NSS) and the internal Course Experience Survey (CES) to all undergraduate students at the University. The NSS is open to all final year students who have not previously been invited to complete it, and the CES to all first and second year students, plus any final year students who have previously completed the NSS.

Our 2018 survey results showed a very strong picture overall, with the NSS reporting 86.18% overall satisfaction (compared to 83.39% nationally), and the University being ranked 36=/154 for overall satisfaction (Times Higher Education) and 15/131 for Teaching Quality and 18/131 for Student Experience (The Times Good University Guide 2019). For the CES, we achieved 88% overall satisfaction, with overall scores for each key topic showing an increase from 2017, with teaching, course challenge and learning resources in particular continuing to perform very strongly.

All staff are asked to promote the surveys to students to ensure that we achieve strong response rates. Our response rates for the 2018 surveys remained high for the NSS (79%) and the CES (50%), and we are aiming to build and improve on these results for 2019.

Weekly completion rates for the CES will be made available to Schools via the L&T and Quality Coordinators, and a summary will be published at from 11 February. The spreadsheet will also be made available at O:\All Staff Documents\University Student Survey\2019 on a weekly basis for all staff to access.

Weekly completion rates for the NSS will be made available to identified staff via a OneDrive folder. As the OfS is producer of official statistics and complies with the UK Statistics Authority’s code of practice, the rules around how we are able to share response rates have changed this year. Further information will be provided to staff who need access to this information in due course.

Completion of these surveys confers many benefits to the University, including the use of NSS data in Key Information Set published at Unistats for prospective students, and to inform our ongoing work on further enhancing the student experience. Key NSS questions also make up 3 of the core TEF metrics.  Information and supporting PowerPoint presentations and videos on this year’s surveys can be found on OneDrive.

The NSS is accessed via a personalised email link and at and the CES via a personalised email link and on MyDay.

All students who complete a survey online will have the option to enter a prize draw to win 1 of 5 £250 Love2shop gift cards. Additionally, £1,000 is available to Schools with a 60%+ response rate for the CES. This fund is for Course Reps to use to improve the student experience within the Institute; Education, Science and Sport have been awarded the funds in previous years, and have used the funds to set up a society, to organise events and to purchase equipment.

The CES is open until 30 March and the NSS until 30 April, with results for the CES being made available during April, and the NSS during August/September.

Please encourage your students to complete these important surveys as their views and opinions will help to shape the future of our University and its student experience.

Kind regards,

Ross Renton
