Research England published the final guidance documents on the Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF 2021) in January 2019. These staff briefings will provide an overview of the finalised assessment framework and what this will mean for academic staff.
The briefing will also present the details of the University’s REF 2021 Code of Practice. This Code – a requirement of the REF 2021 framework – sets out the University’s approaches to identifying staff for submission for REF 2021 (specifically how it will determine staff with “significant responsibility for research” and how it will determine research independence) and to selecting outputs for submission to REF 2021, including how it will take into account any circumstances that may have limited a member of staff’s ability to be a productive researcher. These approaches reflect the University’s duties under the Equality Act as an employer and public body.
The Code is presented in draft form and staff will have the opportunity to provide feedback both at the briefing but also after the event during a 4-week period of consultation.
