Workplace Challenge rounders tournament

Over 250 people from 14 companies from across Worcestershire took part in a Workplace Challenge rounders tournament, organised by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, on Wednesday 24th May.

Hosted at the Lakeside Campus (formerly Top Barn), the aim of the evening was to give workplaces a great opportunity to have some fun and get active with their colleagues as part of Workplace Health Week.

Businesses from across a variety of sectors participated including teams from Compco Fire Systems, Worcester City Council, Bromsgrove District Housing Trust, Action for Children, Interserve, plus a number of different departments representing the University of Worcester and the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to name but a few.

With over 50 games of rounders played over 5 pools, the overall winners of the tournament went to a staff team from Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College closely followed by a team from Worcester Warriors and Tudor Grange Academy.

Jude Wild, a member of the University of Worcester’s Finance team, said “We had a real laugh, and got in some exercise too! Despite nursing various bruises and minor injuries (I think I have whiplash from a particularly spectacular fall last night) we have all made it in today with huge grins on our faces having had a really good evening. We can’t wait for the next one!”

Dr Susie Hart, Director of Sport Partnership and Community Engagement at the University of Worcester said, “It was a pleasure to host the Workplace Challenge Rounders Tournament at our new Lakeside Campus. Working with the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire to engage with the wider Worcestershire business community enabled us to highlight the new campus offering as a multipurpose outdoor activity and sport facility for our staff, students and the community.”

Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire Director, Stephen Brewster, said “It was a fantastic evening and we hope all the businesses enjoyed themselves. It was great to have such a great turnout from a variety of businesses across Worcestershire and see everyone having fun, team building and doing some physical activity as well.”

For more details on how to get involved in the Workplace Challenge please visit www.workplacechallenge.org.uk. The next Workplace Challenge event will be a Footgolf competition at Gaudet Luce Golf Club on Tuesday 21st June, registration is now open on the website.

Over 60s Get Their Own Competitive Games in Worcester

Over 60s from across Worcestershire will come together to compete in the first Worcester Senior Games, taking place at the University of Worcester.

The Games take place on Wednesday, May 11, at the University’s St John’s Campus, and will include walking football, badminton, walking basketball, short mat bowls and adapted indoor cricket.

Dr Susie Hart, the University’s Director of Sport Partnerships and Community Engagement, said the event has been inspired by the successful University of Worcester Seniors (60+yrs) Programme, in which more than 200 clients attend weekly, to engage in a range of inclusive sport and exercise activities, led by professional staff from the University, supported by student coaches and volunteers training to be instructors.

Members of Worcester U3A have volunteered, along with University students, to organise each competition and encourage competitors to enter. Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Sport Partnership, and Age UK, have also contributed by sourcing equipment and promoting the event via local networks.

Senior academics, Dr Clare Rhoden and Dr Jennifer Joyce will join Dr Hart and be in attendance throughout the event to collect valuable applied research data from athletes and spectators.

Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants, is sponsoring the event. Ian Smith, Partner in Charge of Bishop Fleming Worcester Office, said: “The University of Worcester is doing great work in researching, and promoting, the benefits of physical activity for people of more mature years. Bringing that together, in the world class facilities at the University, in the form of the Senior Games is a brilliant initiative, and one we are keen to support as part of our wider relationship with the University.”

The Worcester Senior Games 2017 will be extended to include table tennis, archery and running events, and will welcome competitors from further afield.

Those wishing to enter a competition at the event this year are invited to contact Odette Fielding at o.fielding@worc.ac.uk or by telephone at 01905 855269, or Dr Susie Hart at s.hart@worc.ac.uk or 01905 855140.

Reading the Game – modern sports book writing

Reading the Game
Friday 20th November 2015
The Hive Studio 17.30 – 21.00

Want to know what it is like to write the autobiography of a football legend like David Beckham or Cyrille Regis?

How to tell the compelling inside story of an amazing feat like Sunderland’s giant-killing, against-all-odds 1973 FA Cup win?

Or what it’s like to get down and dirty to unearth exclusive findings the football authorities would sooner be kept unhidden from the public gaze in a sports investigation?

Maybe a reminiscent look back at a game that once was? Or sports fiction writing to appeal to teenagers?

Then why not enjoy an evening dedicated to modern football book writing with renowned sports authors Tom Watt, Chris Green and Lance Hardy – who have penned some of British football’s most notable books of recent times and have been at the forefront of Britain’s post-Fever Pitch football writing boom.

They’ll share thoughts on their own favourite football books of all time which have inspired and influenced their own work.

If you want to know how to go about getting your own football book commissioned, written and published – they’ll provide a detailed guide to the whole process – from shaping a winning synopsis, to exhaustive research, sourcing interviewees (sometimes your heroes), burning midnight oil to meet deadlines and the final satisfaction of seeing your name on the cover and reading favourable reviews.

They’ll also share the inside track of (ghost) writing that most popular of sporting genres – the football autobiography.

Chris Green and Tom Watts will also be running a session in the afternoon from 15.00 specifically for students  – covering topics such as working with the media, publishing a book and the art of storytelling –  please promote this event to your students if you think they would be interested.

For tickets for this free event or for further information, please contact sportsoffice@worc.ac.uk or phone 01905 542658.

Inactive volunteers wanted for research into very time-efficient exercise for improving fitness

In collaboration with Department for Health at the University of Bath, Institute of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Worcester are investigating the benefits of very time-efficient exercise programmes. After promising results in previous studies we will now investigate whether a single short cycle sprint performed three times per week can be sufficient to improve fitness levels. For this study we are looking for healthy volunteers (18-30 years old) who are not currently involved in regular exercise training.

Participation will involve:

  • Two fitness tests (one before and one after the exercise programme)
  • Completing 3 exercise sessions each week for 4 weeks (all supervised in our labs)
  • The exercise sessions will consist of a single 20-second ‘all-out’ cycle sprint
  • Half the participants will be allocated to a control group which will involve doing the fitness tests but not the sprint training

If you would like more information, or are interested in volunteering, please don’t hesitate to contact Annie Lambeth-Mansell by email (a.lambeth-mansell.ac.uk) or by phone (01905 855228).
